Panel speakers:
I graduated from the Technology, Innovation and Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education. I'm a fervent believer in the power of education in changing the world as well as the power of technology in changing education. The education issues of China's underserved children and higher education intrigue me the most. I'm interested in all sorts of new media and technology, MOOCs in particular. As a MOOC developer at HarvardX, I sincerely hope it will bring conducive change to China's higher education landscape.
I am a recent graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education’s International Education Policy program. I first became interested in Massive Open Online Courses for the potential they have to increase equity in education. Since 2005 I have been exposed to the realities rural students face in China through my volunteer teaching experiences in rural Yunnan and Sichuan. I have also spent my high school and college years volunteering underserved school here. Because of my experiences I feel that MOOCs have a unique ability to reach these students who would otherwise not have the chance to access these materials. Because of this, I am currently helping to develop a MOOC on Chinese history taught by professor Bol and professor Kirby.
With a belief in the large social impact that investing in early childhood education and education technology has, I came to the Harvard Graduate School of Education to study Human Development and Psychology. During my year at Harvard, I turned from a MOOC learner to a MOOC maker and was greatly struck by the potential of online education. I hope that with the flourishing of online education, we are able to truly embrace the life-long learning culture.
Yiran Zhao is a research assistant at Harvard University. She is evaluating the impact of flipped classroom models that use MOOC materials in Harvard College. She graduated from the International Education Policy program at Harvard Graduate School of Education last year. Her main research interests are rural education in developing countries and program evaluation. In CES, she mainly deals with publicity and branding issues.
